Hope, Cascades & Canyons

The Rush of the Fraser Valley

Hope, Cascades and Canyons gets its namesake from its narrow rock canyons, the District of Hope and the North Cascades—the most prominent mountain range in the region. The terrain offers a pristine and natural outdoors experience: from skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling through the Coquihalla Lakes winter wonderland to touring vibrant arts & cultural celebrations and the hand-crafted collectables made by local artisans. A place with many different flavours, Hope is also well-known for being the site of the iconic Rambo film, First Blood, and as The Chainsaw Capital for its over 80 chainsaw carvings placed around town.

Before the name HOPE…

Hope Dots

Well before this territory was ever called Hope, it was known by its Halq’eméylem name, Ts’qo:ls, which means “bald” or “bare,” in reference to the native trees of the area. This is
within the surrounding area, S’ólh Téméxw, meaning “our land” or “our world.”

For us, these names serve as a reminder that our organization stems from a lineage of settlers and visitors to this area, the traditional, ancestral land that was first home to the Stó:lō (people of the river) and associated tribes, in particular the Chawathil peoples.

As settlers and visitors, we therefore acknowledge our duty to treat this land and its first people with the utmost respect and gratitude. When you visit, we hope you’ll show that same respect and encourage those who come after you to do likewise.

Famous for… Chainsaw Carvings!

Hope is renowned for being the Chainsaw Capital. Many of the over 80 chainsaw carvings placed around town were shaped during the picturesque and rustic locale’s bi-annual Chainsaw Carving Competition, which takes place in August. Among the intricate renditions of bears, eagles, canoes, elephants, and more, you may find the famous chainsaw carving of Rambo during the warmer, drier months.
